The Division of Materials Science & Engineering at Boston University is truly interdisciplinary, with collaboration across the College of Engineering, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. We boast impressive research activities in biomaterials, electronic and photonics materials, materials for energy and the environment, and nanomaterials.

MSE faculty members are internationally recognized, attract significant research funding, and are developing revolutionary materials, processes, and devices that impact everyday life.

Our students benefit from all of this. They can choose from the industry-focused Master of Engineering; the research-based Master of Science with thesis (MS) or Master of Science non-thesis (MS), Post-Bachelor’s PhD, and Post-Master’s PhD; and an Undergraduate Minor. As engineers with backgrounds in materials science, they’ll understand the properties of various materials—from metals and semiconductors to biopolymers—and how to manipulate those materials to make useful products. And they’ll meet a growing need in society; applications for new materials, and modifications of existing ones, are expected to keep the global demand for trained materials scientists growing in the 21st century. Our alumni have readily found work in a number of fields, including energy, health care, information technologies, and homeland security.
